Burragorang Lookout
One of nature’s great beauties overlooking Warragamba Dam including bike trails and picnic facilities
High above Warragamba Dam, on the Blue Mountains escarpment, Burragorang lookout is a viewing post for one of nature’s great beauties and the precious resource providing 80 per cent of Sydney’s water supply.
Located just over an hour from Sydney City, visitors will be able to view the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area, the Kanangra-Boyd National Park and the impressive expanse of Warragamba Dam. For the kids, there are excellent bike riding tracks along quiet sealed roads and a playground. Stock the esky up with goodies and make use of the free BBQs and picnic tables for a picturesque lunch in the bush.
Burragorang Lookout is also home to an abundance of flora and fauna, get your cameras ready to snap the noisy black cockatoos hanging from the casuarinas or perhaps one of the shy and beautiful lyrebirds often found scratching in the leaves below the trees.
Burragorang Lookout holds rich Aboriginal significance. The northern part of Burragorang is the traditional home to the Dharug people. “Burragorang” means “home or place of the giant kangagroo”. The lands provided a corridor for people travelling northward from as far afield as Victoria to gather at ceremonial grounds in D’harawal lands I the Cowpastures or Camden areas adjacent to the Nepean River.
